About this Workshop

This MACHW interactive workshop series aims to support CHWs as they strive to serve their clients during these challenging times. The workshop formats will include expert panels, Q and A, and case studies on critical issues from across Massachusetts.

Community Health Workers are central in supporting the health of the communities they work with, and yet, they are often at risk for burnout themselves due to inequitable work conditions. This workshop will discuss strategies for voice and reflect on how to improve well-being at work.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explore the connection between workers’ voices and their well-being as individuals, and as a collective group.
  • Discuss benefits of worker unions and strategies for organizing workers in health and social services.
  • Discuss strategies for voicing and improving well-being at work
  • Recognize how systemic oppressions and practices impact our work and well being

    Yaminette Diaz

  • Yaminette Díaz-Linhart is a PhD candidate at Brandeis University. Her research explores how worker voice and representation impact well-being outcomes for health care and social service workers. She is currently conducting a study to understand the well-being of community health workers in Massachusetts.

  • Kimberly Mendoza Iraheta is a CHW and Regional Chapter Leader in Greater-Boston for the Massachusetts Association of Community Health Workers.


  • Lisette Blondet

  • Lissette Blondet is the director of the Massachusetts Association of Community Health Workers (MACHW). She has dedicated most of her professional life to anchoring community health workers (CHWs) as public health professionals. In 1993, she founded the Community Health Education Center (CHEC), one of the first training and resource centers for CHWs in the country. CHEC’s standards for CHW curricula and core competencies have been replicated in other states. The program was so successful that in 1997, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health funded its expansion to the northeast region of the state. Both centers, CHEC Boston and CHEC Northeast are still thriving and have graduated over a thousand CHWs. More recently, Lissette provided technical assistance to the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund on community health and community health workers. She also previously served as Director of Community Benefits for Cape Cod Healthcare, focusing on making healthcare accessible to the underserved while building her experience in healthcare financing. As the director of MACHW, Lissette brings all her experience and skills to strengthen the association and strategically position the workforce to seize the many opportunities now available through health care reform, including reimbursement and broad recognition of the attributes and competencies of CHWs.


  • Jamie Berberena

  • Jamie Berberena is the Southeast Regional Leader and Advisory Board member with the Massachusetts Association of Community Health Workers. She is a passionate public health advocate focused on promoting racial equity throughout Massachusetts. With over a decade of experience promoting the health and well-being of diverse communities across Massachusetts by providing direct support and guidance through community-based programs, multi-disciplinary clinical programs and health policy initiatives.


  • Areliz Barbosa

  • Areliz Barbosa is a CHW and is the Regional Chapter Leader for Western Massachusetts for the Massachusetts Association of Community Health Workers.

The VT CHEP believes that true change begins at the local level.

Since its start in January 2022, our focus is to engage, empower, and support local communities. The VT CHEP is a statewide initiative with a regional approach.  We partner with local community teams to be sure the work is informed by community voices and to fund local initiatives that address health inequities of those most negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Penrose Jackson

    President and CEO, Vermont Public Health Institute

  • Penrose Jackson serves as CEO of the Institute. She served for 15 years as Community Health Improvement director at the University of Vermont Medical Center, leaving that position in late 2018. During her time with CHI she provided leadership to three Community Health Needs Assessments, as well as to establishment of the Community Health Team and Medication Assisted Treatment team at the Medical Center. She continues to serve as an Advisory Board member of the Association for Community Health Improvement, a subsidiary of the American Hospital Association. She currently works with diverse clients on project planning and management, fund-raising, and population health.

  • Cathy Aikman

    Cathy Aikman

    Operations Manager, Vermont Public Health Institute

  • Cathy Aikman, MA, is passionate about working at non-profits furthering their missions to improve the lives of the people in our communities. Her focus, in most recent years, has been in the public policy arena focused on addiction and recovery. She was the Assistant Director at the Turning Point Center of Chittenden County, Project Manager at Aspenti Health and former Executive Director for the Chittenden County Opioid Alliance, which she joined in May 2016. She also has great interest in the community mental health field and has worked as the Quality Assurance Coordinator at Washington County Mental Health Services, Project Director for Starting Over Strong VT, a FEMA grant statewide crisis counseling program in response to Hurricane Irene and her most recent position as the Project Director for another FEMA crisis counseling program grant providing mental health supports to community members during the pandemic for COVID Support VT. She gained extensive marketing and project management skills, early in her career, as the Volunteer and Marketing Coordinator for the Richmond Floodplain Forest Restoration Project, the Event and Marketing Coordinator for Gardener’s Supply Co., as well as the Corporate Volunteer Event Coordinator for Boston Cares. Cathy received her Master’s degree from Tufts University with a focus on Urban and Social Policy after receiving her Undergraduate degree at Ripon College majoring in Sociology and minoring in Environmental Biology. She has a passion to serve her community, outside of her workday, and has volunteered at various organizations including Feeding Chittenden, Mount Mansfield Union High School Boosters, Terracycle, and had various positions on the Turning Point Center of Chittenden County Board for over four years.

  • Kyra works full-time position for the Vermont Community Health Equity Partnership. She works directly with the Vermont Department of Health Districts and the backbone/integrator staff. Kyra provides community team alignment and facilitates opportunities for backbone/integrator staff to work and learn from each other as well as across districts. Kyra plays a key role in providing training and support to each district. She oversees logistical coordination and management of grant components to ensure achievement of grant goals.

About this course

The goal of this course is to train Community Health Workers on Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and encourage/support them in incorporating best practices, evidence based models, techniques and strategies into their practice at the community level.

About this workshop

This course is designed to teach dental hygienists the skills they need to talk with parents about eating a balanced diet. The course focuses on using accessible and encouraging language as well as providing talking points and conversation starters to use with parents during dental visits.

  • Alison Tovar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Rhode Island (URI). Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, she received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Northeastern University in 2001, a Master’s in Public Health from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2005, and her Ph.D. from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy in 2009. Dr. Tovar established The Healthy Feeding, Health Eating Lab in 2012, with the goal to understand factors that shape eating behaviors early in life, in order to inform community-based interventions among diverse, underrepresented populations.

  • Kate Balestracci is a program manager and co-principal investigator for community nutrition grants that run through the University of Rhode Island’s Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences. She is a graduate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in Exercise Physiology. She then pursued a master’s degree, and later a doctoral degree, in nutrition from the University of Rhode Island. As an accredited Registered Dietitian, Kate has worked in community nutrition since 2007 to provide hands-on nutrition education to the Rhode Island community.

  • Dr. Sam Zwetchkenbaum is the Dental Director in the Oral Health Program at the Rhode Island Department of Health and Medicaid Dental Director at the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. He is a graduate of Moses Brown School in Providence, Brown University, and the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. He received his Master in Public Health (MPH) from the University of Michigan. He has taught and practiced in a number of academic settings, including 17 years at the University of Michigan Hospital Dentistry program providing clinical care and directing the General Practice Residency. Sam is a Past President of the Special Care Dentistry Association.

  • Sadie DeCourcy is the Oral Health Program Manager at the RI Department of Health. Beginning with her role as the Health Coverage Project Coordinator at The Economic Progress Institute, Ms. DeCourcy has pursued a path in public health; empowering people to make informed decisions about their health. Some of her past work includes advocate engagement around the Affordable Care Act implementation, health policy development and oversight with former RI Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts, and implementing a perinatal and infant oral health quality improvement project at the RI Department of Health. Ms. DeCourcy is a graduate of The George Washington University (B.A.) and Suffolk University Law School (J.D.).

About this course

Local boards of health (LBOH) may receive complaints about bed bugs from housing occupants or other community members or a LBOH inspector may identify signs of bed bug infestations during an inspection. The presence of bed bugs can raise concerns about potential health and economic consequences. This training will provide an overview of bed bugs, outline processes and procedures for LBOH to follow when investigating bed bug complaints, and provide resources that can aid in resolving this complex public health issue.

About this course

It is estimated that there are between six and 15 million people who hoard in the United States. This is approximately 2.5 – 5% of the adult population in this country. People who hoard may come to the attention of Local Boards of Health (LBOH). Investigating and resolving situations that involve hoarding can be complicated. This training will provide an overview of hoarding disorder, outline processes and procedures for the LBOH to follow, and list resources that will aid in resolving this complex public health issue.

About this course

Following a short overview of the causes and mechanisms of climate change, the course reviews current and expected human health impacts, with particular emphasis on impacts in Vermont and the northeast. These include heat-related illness, water-related impacts, vector borne diseases, air quality impacts, and mental health and well-being. Because climate change affects some people more than others, populations of concern and measures of vulnerability are addressed. The course culminates with examples of strategies used in Vermont and nationally to reduce climate change impacts on health and to improve health through climate change mitigation actions. Learners can select Level 1 for an overview or Level 2 for a deeper exploration of the five types of health impacts.

This course reviews the four health hazards common to recreational waters: biological, chemical, physical, and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Information is provided on water sampling and testing, visual monitoring, reporting, and recreational water management (i.e., beach closure, signage). This course provides an overview of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and the risks it poses to people and pets. Learn how to monitor recreational waters for cyanobacteria (including distinguishing it from look-alikes), manage recreational waters when cyanobacteria is present, and track blooms. About this course

In the first of four screencasts the public health practitioner is introduced to zoonoses and vectorborne diseases and how they differ from other infectious diseases. In subsequent screencasts, the factors (drivers) that influence zoonoses and vectorborne disease are explained, including human systems, human-animal-environment interaction, and environmental change. Multiple disease-specific examples are provided, including COVID-19.

Zoonotic diseases are those that can be passed between humans and other vertebrate animals and vectorborne disease are those that are transmitted by an arthropod vector like a flea or tick. Because non-human animals serve as a disease reservoir or vector, disease prevention and control strategies differ from other infectious diseases. More than half, an estimated 60%, of all the kinds of infections that people can get are zoonotic and 75% of emerging infectious diseases, including COVID-19, are zoonotic. There are many human-driven factors that influence zoonotic disease emergence and re-emergence. These drivers include infrastructure, travel and trade, culture, agricultural intensification, interaction with domestic and wild animals, climate change, land use, and biodiversity. In this series of four screencasts, you will be introduced to zoonotic and vectorborne diseases and their drivers.

About this course

Although the United States has one of the safest food supplies in the world, foodborne illness still poses a major risk to the population. In Massachusetts, the local board of health or the local health department (called LBOH for this training) grant permits and conduct inspections of retail food establishments to ensure their compliance with food regulations and statutes. Retail food operators and employees are on the front line of food safety and are responsible for following safe food practices. They work together as partners with members of LBOH to provide safe food to consumers. This training will provide food safety information to food operators (permit holders and employees) whose food establishments are governed by State Sanitary Code 105 CMR 590.000, Chapter X - Minimum Sanitation Standards for Food Establishments.

This course provides an overview of basic principles of infection transmission and the role of healthcare staff in preventing the spread of infections to themselves, colleagues and patients. It contains non-graded knowledge checks so learners can interact with the content. The course may be taken in more than one sitting.

  • Tom Carpino is a teaching fellow and PhD candidate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University and is supported by the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (F31AI178878) to study the epidemiology of mpox in the US. He has a wide set of research interests which includes stigma, emerging infections and outbreaks, and STIs in diverse communities. He is a member of Hopkins’ Center for Public Health and Human Rights.

    Prior to his PhD, he earned an MPH from Columbia University in biostatistics and was a co-investigator on several projects to study topics ranging from HIV and Covid-19 to health systems more broadly.
